Ciliate usually in mucous tube, cell about 18-40 x 9-15 microns, usually 20-30 x 9-11 microns, very flexible and about 30 % of length contractile. Body ellipsoidal to ovoid, unflattened, distinctly excavated by oral apparatus in anterior third. Individuals swimming for longer periods usually become fusiform, those being contracted or degenerating become stouter. Macronucleus near mid-body, globular.
