Description of Dactylosoma

Eucoccidian, iIntraerythrocytic primary merogony produces 6 to 16 merozoites by simultaneous exogenous budding; merozoites are frequently arranged on one side of the maturing meront giving a "hand-like" appearance; secondary merogony usually produces 6 smaller merozoites destined to become intraerythrocytic gamonts; in the leech, oocysts form up to 30 or more sporozoites by exogenous budding directly in the cytoplasm of the intestinal epithelial cells; no oocyst wall is formed; definitive hosts, where known, are glossiphoniid leeches; vertebrate intermediate hosts include amphibia, fish, and possibly reptiles. Type species, D. ranarum. With a homonym among the suctoria.
