Description of Ophryocystidae

Neogregarines, with extracellular development in most; two cycles of merogony, micronuclear and macronuclear; meronts are mostly conical or mycetoid and, in many species, are attached to host cell surface by pseudopods which interdigitate with the microvilli of the host epithelial cells ; young gamonts are vermicular or spherical; gamonts are monogametic, gametes are isogametic, and a single oocyst with polar thickenings is formed per gametocyst; oocysts contain eight sporozoites; during gamogony three nuclei are generally formed in each gametocyte; four nuclei degenerate and two become the nuclei of the two gametes.
