A large lizard with a maximum recorded SVL of 210 mm (total length. 385 mm). Tail relatively short, average tail/SVL ratio= 0.7. Ear with several enlarged conical scales at its anterior side; 3-5 scales between suboculars and supral-abials; 22-31 gulars. Dorsals relatively large, 149-185 granular scales around mid-body. Forelimbs covered dorsally with smooth scales, hind limb with spinose tubercles. All caudal segments are made of single scale rows dorsally, only the first 2-3 anterior segments are made of two or more scales ventrally. Coloration varies considerably according to age, sex, and breeding condition. Dorsum of adult breeding males generally greenish blue; head cobalt blue with some black spotting, temporal region and labials with several dark blue or black and yellow streaks; mid-back greenish with transverse bands of black-fringed yellow ocelli, which often coalesce into elongate bars, flanks blue; tail and limbs bluish green; throat and ventral side of neck light blue striped with black; other ventral parts whitish gray with thick blue streaks. Females and juveniles have similar pattern, the blue and green tones being replaced with brown and gray. Cool animals and those outside the breeding season are drabber.
