General Description

Herbs 15-30 cm tall. Rhizome long, slender, branched, producing adventitious roots and aerial stems at nodes; caudex ribbed, 12-28 cm long, with a basal rosette of crowded leaves and 1-2 bracts; bracts brownish, oblong-ovate, sheathing, scales. Petiole 2-4.5 cm long; leaf blade purplish and often glaucous abaxially, green adaxially, elliptic or ovate, 3-6 cm long, 2.4-3 cm wide, leathery, base broadly cuneate or suborbicular, margin entire or crenate, apex obtuse or rounded. Scape with 2 ovate-lanceolate scalelike bracts sheathing at base; raceme 8-12-flowered, 10-15 cm long. Pedicel 5-9 mm long; bracts ligulate. Flowers spreading or rarely nodding, rotate. Sepals ligulate, 5-7.5 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, margin entire, apex often acute. Petals pure white, obovate-elliptic or obovate. Filaments glabrous; anthers yellow, tubules present. Style light red, nearly erect or upper part slightly curved upward, dilated at apex into a ring. Capsule 6-10 mm in diameter.
