Terns: with a graceful sweep, they dive into the sea just beyond the waves. These elegant birds hunt fish. They go after large schools of lesser sandeel, young herring and sprat which swim in the North Sea coastal zone. The fatty and nutritious fish from these schools are vital for terns and their chicks. During the first weeks of a young tern's life, the parent birds fly back and forth between the fishing grounds and nesting colonies on land. It's a tough job ... also because they can only carry one fish at a time.
