Characteristics

The Aneuretinae share the following characters with the Formicinae and Dolichoderinae (Bolton 2003):

• Dorsal cuticular flap of the metapleural gland anteriorly reduced and posteromedially extended
• Petiole with complete tergosternal fusion
• Postpygidial glands absent

Synapomorphies of the Aneuretinae include the following (based primarily on the sole extant genus, Aneuretus; Bolton 2003):

• Petiole with a long anterior peduncle
• Helcial attachment high on anterior face of abdominal segment III
• Larvae with abundant spinules
