North American Ecology (US and Canada)

Hypaurotis crysalus, a beautiful hairstreak butterfly, is resident to the southwestern United States including Utah, Colorado Arizona and New Mexico, and into Mexico (Scott 1986). Habitats are upper Sonoran to Canadian zone oak woodland. Host plants are restricted to the tree Quercus gambelii (Fagaceae). Eggs are laid on twigs of the host plant singly. Individuals overwinter as eggs. There one flight each year with the approximate flight time late June-July31 at low altitude, July15-Aug30 at high altitude (Scott 1986).
