Justification
Assessed as Vulnerable due to its restricted Extent of Occurrence, which covers an area of 10,100 km². This is considered to be less than 10 locations as a few threatening events could rapidly affect all the Suarez River population. In addition, B. plutarcoi is threatened by a continuing decline in habitat quality as a result of water pollution in the Suarez River. Further research on the direct actions of these threats on this species should be carried out.

Threats

Major Threats
The Suarez River begins at the outlet of Lake Fúquene. Lake Fúquene has deteriorated extensively due to excessively high levels of phosphates and nitrates and the proliferation of aquatic plants, which have accelerated eutrophication (the rapid increase of nutrients into the water). Cattle producers are responsible for 80% of the pollutants that flow into the lake; the remaining pollution comes from industry and human settlements around the lake, and upstream potato growers who use high amounts of fertilizers (Estrada and Quintero 2005). It is suspected that any pollution in Lake Fúquene will also affect the Suarez River and therefore threaten B. plutarcoi.

Conservation Actions
There are no conservation measures in place, although the population trends are being monitored. It is recommended research into the effects of threats are carried out, following the findings, actions should be implemented to try and decreased/ halt the negative impacts the water pollution is causing.
