Pacific drum



Body short, oval, compressed; back humped; head short, compressed; snout short;  eye large, 3.6-4.0 in head length; mouth slighly oblique, ends behind center of eye; lower jaw projecting slightly; 4 minute pores on tip of chin, no barbel; snout with 8 pores; teeth small and sharp, in 1-2 rows; gill rakers 31-33, long and slender; preopercular margin smooth; dorsal fin deeply notched X + I, 26-28; anal fin II, 6,  2nd  spine strong, slightly shorter than first soft ray; pectoral fins 16-17, relatively long, reaching to about level of anus; pelvic fins shorter, reaching about half way to anal fin origin; tail  with angular point; scales rough on body, smooth on head and fins; soft dorsal and anal fins with scaly sheath on basal ½; pored lateral-line scales 45-50.

Silver, greyish on upper back; sides sometimes with darkish stripes following scale rows; axil of pectoral fin dark; fins pale to dusky.

Size: reaches length of at least 30 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters.

Depth: 1-50 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to Chile; the Galapagos.

Diagnostic Description

Body moderately short, and not very deep; back little arched or elevated; mouth large and oblique; posterior end of upper jaw extending beyond center of eye; snout with 3 dorsql pores; lower branch of first gill arch with 20 to 21 gill rakers; pectoral fins with 16 to 17 rays; ctenoid scales on body; body gray to silvery brown, darker dorsally; flanks with very distinct black stripes along the scales rows; fins pale to grayish (Ref. 55763).
