Yellow-eye croaker



Body short, oblong, moderately compressed; head low, snout conical; eye large 3.3-3.9 in head length; tip of lower jaw with slight knob; mouth fairly large, slightly oblique, lower jaw projecting; snout with 8 pores; chin with 5 pores, but no barbels; lower jaw slightly projecting, with a pair of large canines at front; 21-23 gill rakers; preopercle smooth;  dorsal rays XI + I, 25-27; anal rays II, 8-9, 2nd  spine < longest ray; tail margin straight or slightly rounded; scales rough on body, smooth on head; 2/3 of soft dorsal and anal fins with scaly sheath; pored lateral-line scales 48-50.

Color brownish with silvery reflections; sides with narrow longitudinal brown stripes following scale rows, these becoming oblique above lateral line; pelvics and anal blackish; juveniles silvery with distinct midlateral brown stripe and narrower stripes following scale rows.


Size: to about 30 cm.

Inhabits rocky areas and coral reefs.

Depth: 3-30 m?

Southern Baja and the SE Gulf of California to northern Peru.
