Inhabits inshore waters and rivers (Ref. 4967). Prefers sand and gravel substrate. Juveniles stay in riverine habitats while adults inhabit both riverine and lacustrine habitats. Gastropod mollusks are an important food item in the lake, while insect larvae are of equal importance in hard bottom areas. Plants, fishes, and crustaceans are also eaten. More plant material is consumed by juveniles (Ref. 34291). Oviparous (Ref. 205). A food fish for humans (Ref. 4537).
