Miscellaneous Details

"Taxonomic Notes: Menon (1992) described Tor kulkarnii from Darna river, a tributary of upper Godavari river in Deolali, Nashik, Maharashtra. Menon (1992) considered this species as a dwarf cognate of Tor khudree, however, Jayaram (1999, 2005, 2010) considered T. kulkarnii as a synonym of T. khudree. Even though T. kulkarnii is considered as valid species (Menon 1999, 2004, Nautiyal et al. 2008) this species is remarkably similar to T. khudree and the observed differences could only be population variations rather than species variations. Therefore, taxonomic status of T. kulkarnii is questionable. The types examined indicate Tor kulkarnii to be a distinct species (M. Arunachalam pers. comm.), however, since Tor exhibits a high degree of phenotypic plasticity, a good comparative and molecular study of types of both the species is urgently required. Tor khudree is also recorded from the type locality of T. kulkarnii (S. Jadhav pers. obs.)."
