Inhabits lakes and rivers (Ref. 4967). Occasionally territorial (Ref. 2). Periphyton browser, additionally feeding on bottom deposits and associated phytoplankton (Ref. 30832). Maternal mouthbrooder (Ref. 54046, 55060).
