Range Description

Bathycongrus retrotinctus has been recorded from Japan and the Philippines. This species is thought to be present in the Sea of Japan, due to two specimens being found in the Tokyo fish market (Jordon and Synder 1901). However, no live specimens of B. retrotinctus have been collected from this region and the market stall records date back to over a hundred years ago. The six specimens collected from the Philippines were initially misidentified as Bathycongrus megalops, before later being reassessed as B. retrotinctus (Castle and Smith 1999).
