Biology

Adults inhabit rubble and dead coral outcrops that are often situated in sandy areas (Ref. 7247). They occur solitarily or in small groups. Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).

Distribution

Range Description

The Yellowfin Damselfish, Chrysiptera flavipinnis, is distributed from Samarai Island (southeast Papua New Guinea), the Solomon Islands and New Caledonia, south to Sydney, including the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.

Chrysiptera flavipinnis has been assessed as Least Concern. There are no known major threats for this species. It is likely to be undergoing declines due to harvesting and habitat degradation, however these threats are not known across its entire range. It is found on sites with dead coral, indicating it is not reliant on live coral directly. Monitoring of the harvest levels and population numbers is needed to ensure threats don't become more widespread.

The Yellowfin Damselfish is commercially harvested for the aquarium trade. This species may also be threatened by a number of other threats upon its habitat, such as destructive fishing practices, eutrophication, sedimentation, tourism, and coastal development. However these are localised threats only and this species is not dependent on live coral cover.
