Paralectotypes: BMNH 1899.9.26.98-99 (2); MRAC 807-810 (4), 811-815 (5), 1281 (1). Lectotype designated in Poll 1967:106 [ref. 3529]. •Valid as Brachypetersius altus (Boulenger 1899) -- (Paugy 1984:164 [ref. 6183], Nzeyimana & Amiet 1992:31 [ref. 19559]). •Valid as Phenacogrammus altus (Boulenger 1899) -- (Géry 1996:8 [ref. 22207]). General Description
Depth of body 2 1/5 to 2 1/3 times in total length, length of head 3½ to 3 2/3 times. Head twice as long as broad, longer than deep ; snout much shorter than eye, which is 2 to 2 1/3 times in length of head ; interorbital width about 3 times in length of head ; maxillary hardly reaching to below anterior border of eye ; 12-14 teeth (4/8-10) in upper jaw, 10 (8/2) in lower. Gill-rakers rather long, about 12 on lower part of anterior arch. Dorsal II 8, originating immediately behind vertical of base of ventrals, at equal distance from end of snout and from caudal, longest ray as long as head. Anal III 23-26 . Pectoral a little shorter than head, extending a little beyond origin of ventral. Caudal forked, lobes pointed. Caudal peduncle as long as deep. Scales 23-26 4½ /3½, 2 between lateral line and root of ventral. Silvery, back olive, scales dark-edged ; a large rounded black spot on the caudal peduncle and the median caudal rays ; adipose fin blackish. Total length 65 mm.
