Large-mouth blenny


Body elongate; head broad, snout blunt; eye large; nostrils with cirri; a branched cirrus over each eye; heavily branched cirri on each side of nape; mouth large, slightly oblique, top rear jawbone exposed, not in a sheath;  teeth on center front of roof of mouth, but not sides; dorsal fin XVII-XIX, 10-12, notch between spines and rays; anal rays II, 17-19; pectoral rays 17-19; 3 pelvic soft rays; 64-69 lateral line scales; head scaleless, except 10 or more scales embedded on upper margin of gill cover. 


Greenish brown with about 8 darker bars along side; 2 thin dark stripes bordering a pale area behind and a little below eye; a black blotch at front of dorsal fin; numerous small white spots on lower part of head and body.


Maximum size to 17.8 cm.

Habitat: weed covered rocky shores.

Depth: 1-10 m.

Central Baja California to the central Gulf of California to near Acapulco, the Revillagigedos islands. The most common member of the genus at most localities in the Gulf of California.
