Male begins construction and the oval to circular nests are in gravel between larger rocks. Up to 25 lampreys may spawn in one nest with 5 times as many males present as females. Up to 5185 pale yellow to light green eggs about 1.2 mm in diameter are produced by each female. Ammocoetes live 5-6 years (perhaps 7.5 years) and transformation begins in the fall and over winter. Ammocoetes have been sold as bait for sport fish in Québec (Ref. 12204).
