Lutjanus jordani (Gilbert, 1898)

Whipper snapper, Jordan's snapper

Body oval; front and rear nostrils simple holes; mouth relatively large and protractile; teeth conical to caniniform, those at front of jaws generally enlarged and fang-like; tooth patch at central roof of mouth diamond shaped; sides of roof of mouth with 1 tooth patch; 16-17 gill rakers; preopercle serrated, lower margin notched; dorsal rays X, 14; dorsal continuous; anal rays III, 9; soft dorsal and anal with rounded ends; tail with straight edge; bases of soft dorsal and anal fins scaly; scale rows on upper back parallel to lateral line.

Greyish or dark olive to reddish with silvery sheen on lower sides; freshly captured specimens often exhibit silvery-white spots on centre of scales forming longitudinal rows, these soon fade and fish becomes mainly dark brown to blackish.

Size: reaches about 61 cm.

Inhabits inshore areas, including shallow mangrove-lined embayments, also occurs on deeper offshore trawling grounds.

Depth: 0-200 m.

Central Baja to northern Peru, including Cocos and the Galapagos and Malpelo.

Diagnostic Description

Head pointed, dorsal profile of forehead somewhat angular. Preorbital bone broad, maxilla extending nearly to mid-eye level. Preopercular notch and knob well developed. Scale rows on back parallel to lateral line. Upper back and top of head dark olive; sides and ventral parts dark purplish; silvery spots on side forming longitudinal rows.

This species is common in some parts of its range, such as in Malpelo, Colombia where it is often present in extremely large groups. However, it is considered to be uncommon in continental Colombia and Nicaragua, and rare in Ecuador and in Panama reefs.
