Escal appendage pattern A; esca with a stout, unpigmented anterior appendage, without internal pigment; a pair of medial escal appendages each consisting of two or three branched filaments, the distal tips of which are pigmented in most specimens larger than approximately 48 mm; a truncated terminal escal papilla, with a distal spot of pigment in some specimens; a stout, unpigmented posterior escal appendage; lateral escal appendages absent; on each side, a large, membranous, oval or crescent-shaped, anterolateral flap, distal half of which is darkly pigmented in most specimens larger than approximately 26 mm.

Subopercular bone relatively long and slender, without indention on posterodorsal margin; length of ventral fork of opercle 20.7–26.5% SL; ratio of lengths of dorsal and ventral forks of opercle 0.45–0.54.

Epibranchial teeth absent; teeth present on pharyngobranchial II; total number of teeth in upper jaw 50–145, in lower jaw 59–137; number of teeth on vomer 6–14; dorsal-fin rays 5 or 6; anal-fin rays 4; pectoral-fin rays 14–16.Measurements in percent of standard length: head length 32.1–40.6; head depth 35.2–46.9; premaxilla length 26.8–31.2; lower jaw length 37.2–48.3; illicium length 27.7–31.2.
