Chaunax flammeus is a bathydemersal species that has a depth range of 195-810 m. Congener Chaunax stigmaeus has been found sitting on the dense rubble beds of dead coral (Lophelia pertusa) off the southeastern USA. Other congeners have been found on soft bottoms (Caruso et al. 2007). Species from the Chaunacidae family occur on continental slopes (FAO 1999).
