Distant goby,     Island goby


Body robust; head round; with fleshy crest along top of head and nape; mouth very oblique; head without pores; papillae around mouth, on cheeks and operculum and over eye; front nostril a long tube, rear nostril a raised rim; tongue round to blunt; 5-7 gill rakers; dorsal fin VI (1st  2 spines filamentous in male)+ I, 11 (10-12) rays; 9 (8-10) anal rays; 18-19 (17-20) pectoral rays; pelvics fused into disc; pectoral rays unbranched; tail fin short, round, with 17 segmented rays; scales rough, body covered, ~ 29 between gill opening and base of caudal fin, none on head, nape, chest and pectoral base. 


Upper half of head red, whitish below with red spots; four narrow blue bars dorsally on head; body red at front, purplish brown at rear, with 13-15 narrow blue bars.


Size: to 2.5 cm.

Inhabits rocky reefs.

Depth: 3-20 m.

Revillagigedo Islands.

Major Threats
This species has a restricted distribution and shallow water habitat. In the Eastern Tropical Pacific, severe localized fish species declines have occurred after strong ENSO events that result in shallow waters that are too warm and nutrient poor for extended periods of time (Grove 1985, Edgar et al. 2009). The frequency and duration of ENSO events in this region of the Eastern Tropical Pacific (e.g. the up-welling zone off the coast of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama and the offshore islands) appears to be increasing (Glynn and Ault 2000, Soto 2001, Chen et al. 2004). Given this species' restricted distribution and shallow water habitat, oceanographic environmental changes, such as those associated with future ENSO events, may have detrimental effects on the survival of this species.
