Capable of withstanding high temperatures and brackish water conditions (10 ppt. salinity). Carnivorous, feed on small fishes, crustaceans and worms. Breed during summer flooding; pelagic eggs are released after an upstream migration and hatch in about 30 hours. Eggs are guarded and fanned by the male parent (Ref. 205). Sexual maturity is reached at a length of about 24-28 centimeters. One of few good angling species available in the arid interior of the continent (Ref. 44894).
