Thick-scale silverside

Abdomen rounded in cross section, not compressed into a keel; sensory system on snout with L shaped furrows at front; top jaw extendible; center roof of mouth without teeth; dorsal rays III-V + 7-9, first dorsal origin behind origin of anal fin; anal rays I, 20-25; pectoral fins longer than head, reaching well past base of pelvic fins, frequently near their tips, but not to anus; midlateral scales 43-47; scales of body with ruffled edges; all of anal fin base with 1-row scale sheath.

Dull greenish or olive on back, sides silvery white with well pronounced silver midlateral stripe.

Size: grows to 16 cm.

Habitat: commonly forms aggregations in shallow bays and on coastal reefs.

Depth: 0-10 m?

El Salvador to Ecuador.
