Amphistichus koelzi is a demersal species found in the intertidal zone to a depth of 9 m. It is most commonly seen in the surf zone off sandy beaches.

Like congeners, such as Amphistichus argentus, it is likely this species forms small schools, feeds on crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates.
