Endemic species widespread within the Malagarasi river basin. Threatened by water turbidity due to erosion on watershed and agriculture extension but there is no current indication of a significant population decline. Potentially the species may be more widespread than thought. More surveys are recommended for this species.

Haplochromis paludinosus is a species of fish in the Cichlidae family. It is found in Burundi and Tanzania.
Its natural habitats are rivers, swamps, freshwater marshes, and inland deltas. It is not considered a threatened species by the IUCN.
