This species of fish is of the genus Lactarius in the family Lactariidae. It is also known as the milky travelly or the 'parava', and is found in pelagic-neritic, brackish, and marine waters. This fish is more commonly known as Butter Fish and in Telugu as "Methani Paara" amongst fisherman community in Andhra Pradesh, India

Description

It is covered in silvery grey scales with blue iridescence dorsally, silvery white ventrally; upper part of the gills are covered with a dusky black spot; fins pale yellow and the mouth is large and oblique.
