Obelia spp. is a genus of Hydrozoan Cnidarians. Obelia has a worldwide distribution among coastal waters. Similar to other cnidarians, Obelia has nematocysts (stinging cells) which are used to stun and capture its prey, which range from tiny crustaceans to microorganisms (Sutherland, 2016). A key feature of Obelia that separates it from other hydrozoans is its consumption of bacteria. While other hydrozoans consume small metazoans, Obelia has been shown to capture and consume bacteria from the water column (Boero, 2007).
