The grizzled skipper is a fairly rare non-migrating butterfly, forced into several isolated locations. The species used to be much more common in the Netherlands. The grizzled skipper can be found in transition areas of dry to damp or wet scanty grasslands. Dewberry and tormentil are important plants for this butterfly. There are still large populations found in the dunes of Schiermonnikoog.
