North American Ecology (US and Canada)Speyeria mormonia is resident to the northwestern United states, from California north to Alaska, east to New Mexico and Manitoba, with a small separate population in Arizona (Scott 1986). Habitats are upper Canadian to lower alpine zone meadows. Host plants are herbaceous and restricted to several species within genus Viola (Violaceae). Individuals overwinter as unfed first instar larvae. There is one flight each year with the approximate flight time July 15-early Sept. in the southern part of their range, July 1- Aug. 31 northward (Scott 1986).
