North American Ecology (US and Canada)

Speyeria idalia is resident to the central and northeastern United States (Scott 1986). Habitats are wet meadows and moist prairie. Host plants are herbaceous and restricted to several species in genus Viola (Violaceae). Eggs are laid haphazardly, near the host plant, singly. Individuals overwinter as unfed first instar larvae. There is one flight each year with the approximate flight time June 1 ? early Sept. (Scott 1986).
