Occurs in almost all of Europe. However, in Scandinavia, Britain, Ireland and the Baltic States it is largely restricted to coastal areas. Absent from some parts of west France and large parts of Greece, Albania, FYR of Macedonia, south of Bulgaria and the Mediterranean islands except Sicily. Its elevational range is from sea level to 2,000 m. This is a European endemic species.
