This species is found in northern and central Colombia, northwestern and southern Venezuela, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, eastern Bolivia, eastern and southern Paraguay, northern Argentina (Misiones), and western and southern Brazil. This species is replaced by Caluromys derbianus to the west of the Andes (Eisenberg, 1989). This species is found up to an altitude of 2,000 m (Soriano et al., 1999) or 2,500 m (Bangs, 1898). This species is sympatic with C. philander (Patton and Costa, 2003)
