Description of Eutreptia

Eutreptiid euglenids, spindle-shaped, with pronounced euglenoid movement; 2 emergent flagella, equal in length and thickness, heterodynamic, both highly mobile during swimming; numerous ribbon-shaped chloroplasts, usually radiating from a paramylon centre (pyrenoid surrounded by a rigid sheath of paramylon grains); eyespot present, flagellar swelling on one flagellum; typically brackish or marine; type species: Eutreptia viridis Perty 1852.
