Range Description

This species was described from Senegal, but has been reported from a set of widely separated savanna localities from west, north central, east central, and southern Africa (Cambefort 1991, Schoolmeesters 2011). In southern Africa, available records show a similar distribution pattern toScarabaeus(Kheper) nigroaeneus(Boheman) centred on moist savanna of northeast Africa, although the distribution is more restricted due to its specialized dung and soil type associations. Records from Angola could not be verified. Taking the disjunct distribution into account, the estimated extent of occurrence of this species is in excess of three million km2.
