Global Range: Ferocactus cylindraceus var. lecontei occurs in central and southwest Arizona; in California in the Mojave Desert, Colorado Desert in Riverside Co., San Diego Co. and rare in Imperial Co.; in Nevada in Clark Co., and in Utah from Mohave Co. to Coconino Co. (Benson 1982). F. cylindraceus var. lecontei also occurs in northern Mexico (Hickman 1993).
Comments: Gravelly or rocky hillsides, canyon walls, alluvial fans, and wash margins or sany flats in the desert; esp. 750-1500 m (Benson, 1982).
