This is an emydid turtle that is widely distributed throughout the US and parts of Canada. It is found in ponds and lakes. Its common name is the Painted Turtle. The name comes from its bright red and yellow coloration.

Painted turtles live in ponds and lakes. The individual captured at the 2009 Indiana Dunes BioBlitz was caught by setting traps in the Millers Wood Pannes.
