This is a male specimen!!

This must be a male crab, since the the central plate is slender and narrow. In addition, it has been tapering towards the mouth area!!

I know C. Hepatica from the RS. Most of the pics seem to me to be Calappa, not sure about the species - except the 7th exemplar which has darker pincers. You should consult Prof. J Poupin who used to be in Polynesia (don't know his present address)

This looks very different from the other images in the Calappa hepatica media gallery http://eol.org/pages/343925/media. Is it a different sex or life stage or is there some misidentification somewhere?
