Range Description

This species is known only from the type locality of Bismarckburg, Togo. It probably also occurs in Ghana as the type locality is very close to the border. The elevational range is not known. Leimacomys was first collected by R. Bttner or his local assistant in 1890 and the locality given as Bismarckburg, which was the colonial district headquarter located east of the modern town of Yegu, about 20 km east of KRNP in Togo (0815'N; 0040'E). Only two specimens were preserved at the Humboldt Museum in Berlin and were subsequently described as a new species, but they remain the only known specimens today (Dieterlen 1976; Denys 1993; Misonne 1966). In the 1990s, two expeditions attempted to rediscover Leimacomys buettneri but without success (Decher pers. comm.).
