Range Description

This widespread species is found on the island of New Guinea (Indonesia and Papua New Guinea), where it is found on the Vogelkop Peninsula, north and south of the Central Cordillera as far east as the Sepik-Ramu drainage basin (Flannery 1995a). It is also present on a number of offshore islands in the Bismarck Archipelago (Papua New Guinea), the Solomon Islands, and adjacent island groups. It ranges as far east as Tikopia in the Solomon Islands. It is possible that it has been introduced (mostly many thousands of years ago) to much, or all, of the insular part of its range. This species may be more widespread than current records indicate, as praetor-like animals are being trapped outside of the known range. The elevational range of the species is from sea level to 2,000 m asl.
