Serranus huascarii Steindachner, 1900

Flag serrano,     Peruvian serrano

Body elongate, moderately compressed; preopercle regularly serrated, no spur with enlarged spines, its margin barely convex; mouth large, oblique, lower jaw projecting, mouth ends almost under middle of eye; 12-13 lower gill rakers; dorsal X, 12, spines increase rapidly in length to 4th  then decrease in size; anal III, 7, 2nd  spine a little longer than 3rd; pelvics inserted before pectoral base; pectoral reaching nearly to anus,13-17; tail concave; scales rough, relatively large, 48 lateral scales.


Head, body, and dorsal, tail, anal and pelvic very dark grey-brown; tail black, with a white bar in center; iris yellow-brown; ~ 5 pale blotches along upper back; pale yellow elongate blotch behind pectoral, shading into a silvery band; a purple blotch above anus.



        Size: 20 cm.

Habitat: rocky bottoms.

        
        Depth: 80-200 m?

        The central Gulf of California to Chile.
