Chili sea-catfish


Body robust; forehead rough, with thin skin, its central groove broad and shallow; bony process on nape behind head shield short (4.7-6.7% of SL)  and with wide base (7.5-8.8% of SL); wide between front nostrils (8-9.5% of SL; mouth wide (13.2-15.9% of SL); teeth at front of top jaw sharp and small, in a broad band; roof of mouth with conical teeth conical, in four patches, two inner ones may be fused and joined with large outer patches; gill opening wide, membranes not adhering to breast; gill rakers on first arch 11-12, 10-13 on second arch, neither arch with rakers on rear surface;  plate at front of dorsal fin base large, square or hexagonal and shaped like a forward pointing arrow; dorsal rays I, 7; anal rays 18-20; pectoral rays I, 10-11, inner margin of pectoral spine finely serrated; bony plate above base of pectoral fin triangular, pointed.


Dark brown or bluish on back, silvery white on sides and belly; fins dusky.

Size: reaches 52 cm.

Habitat: coastal waters; mainly marine and not common in shallow turbid waters, prefers deeper water of estuaries, not in rivers.

Depth: 10-30 m?

Eastern Gulf of California to northern Peru.

Diagnostic Description

Body robust and depressed; snout prominent; mouth large; eyes medium sized (5.8 to 8.5 times in head length); cephalic plate granulated; with striations extending to the inter-orbital space; jaw teeth small, set in broad bands; palate with four plates of villiform teeth, the lateral ones being larger, triangular, and extended backwards; lower branch of the first gill arch with 7 to 10 gill rakers (Ref. 55763).
