General Description

 On Potato Sucrose Agar (PSA). Colonies. After 4 days growth varies from 4.7-5.85 cm diam. with a mean ñ SD = 5.36 ñ 0.31; aerial mycelium white often scanty, with grayish violet pigmentation, some isolates not producing aerial mycelium, but nearly covered by a sheet of conidia. On Potato Dextrose agar (PDA). Colonies. After 10 days growth varies from 8.15-9.4 cm length with a mean ñ SD = 8.56 ñ 0.32; with deep purple discoloration of agar, and aerial mycelium white felted with deep magenta; mycelium producing globose, smooth-walled "chlamydospores", usually abundantly, commonly intercalary in hyphae, in pairs, chains and clusters. Conidia. Of two types; macroconidia straight to falcate, thin walled, 15-30 (-46) × 2.5-3.5 μ, 1- to 5-septate, but predominantly 3-septate, each with a curved to almost hooked apical cell and foot-shaped basal cell; microconidia fusiform to reniform or oval, 6-11 × 2-3 μ, 0- to 1- septate, produced in false heads on monophialidic conidiogenous cells. Notes. This species grows on Glycerol Nitrate Agar (G25N) and produces orange aerial mycelia and brown pigmentation; growth on mannitol medium results in white or pale red mycelium and pale red to brownish red pigmentation.
