Perennial marine herb. Rhizome reddish-brown, angled, bearing roots and scales 5-10 mm long. Leafy stems up to 35 cm. Leaves: sheath 15-30 mm long, with obtuse auricles; lamina falcate, 5-15 cm long; margin irregularly serrate. Flowers on shortened side-branches; bracts greenish often tinged with red at maturity. Male flowers: anthers 6-10 mm, each with a short appendage. Females flowers: ovary 1-2 mm, ellipsoid. Fruit 3.5-6 cm long, free-floating when ripe, sometimes developing when still attached.
