Amphiesma stolatum is the type species for the genus Amphiesma and, in their revision of this genus, Guo et al. (2014) provisionally segregated out all other members of the genus, making it monotypic (although they suggested that further study may reveal that additional species should be included in Amphiesma and that cryptic species may currently be unrecognized within A. stolatum). Amphiesma stolatum is widely distributed in India and is abundant in Assam (Baruah et al. et al. 2001). In experiments using captive snakes, frogs were by far the most commonly taken prey (Baruah et al. et al. 2001).
