A large lizard with a maximum recorded SVL of 175 mm (total length 316 mm). Tail relatively long, average tail/SVL ratio = 0.9. Ear without enlarged scales at its anterior side; 4-6 scales between suboculars and supralabials; 29-42 gulars. Dorsals small, 189-260 granular scales around mid-body. All limbs covered dorsally with small granular scales, except lower hind limb with some spinose tubercles. All caudal segments are made of single scale rows dorsally, only the first two or 3 anterior segments are made of two or more scales ventrally. Coloration varies considerably according to age, sex, and breeding condition. Dorsum of adult breeding males green, brightest on head; back with orange crossbars with black fringed white ocelli, arranged in transverse bands; tail yellowish green; throat and ventral side of neck green with orange blotches; other ventral parts whitish with few sporadic greenish marks. Females brownish with dark edged ocelli on dorsum, throat reddish. Generally cool animals and those outside the breeding season are drabber. Juveniles express the adult pattern in brownish tones.
