Drepanoptila holosericea is endemic to New Caledonia (to France) where it is common in suitable habitat throughout the main island. Although it is absent from the Loyalty islands, it is present on the Ile des Pins, where it is common (V. Chartendrault and N. Barr in litt. 2007). Recent studies estimate the population to be in the region of 140,000 birds (Ekstrom et al. 2000).
