According to Fraser (1934) the type material was collected from the Toungoo and Karen districts, Myanmar. Hämäläinen and Pinratana (1999) recorded the nominate A. x. xanthenatus from Chiang Mai and Kanchanaburi in Thailand. Asiagomphus xanthenatus acco Asahina (1996) was described from Cuc Phuong, Gia Vien, Ninh Binh Province, Viet Nam and Wilson (2005) subsequently recorded Asiagomphus xanthenatus acco from Chunxiu, Guangxi. All these records occupy a similar latitude across Indo-China through to southern China.
