General DescriptionOn Potato Sucrose Agar (PSA). Colonies. After 4 days, growth varies from 4.8-5.25 cm diam. with a mean ñ SD = 5 ñ 0.19, with white aerial mycelium and colourless or, less frequently pale violet pigmentation. On Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA)> Colonies. After 10 days, growth varies from 7.8-8.35 cm length with a mean ñ SD = 8.08 ñ 0.25, with white aerial mycelium and colourless or, less frequently purple pigmentation; production of "chlamydospores" not observed. Conidiomata. Sporodochial, orange. Conidia. Of two types; macroconidia often difficult to find, rather slender with no distinct curvature, thin walled, 3- to 5-septate, 30-60 × 3-3.5 μm, each with acurved apical cell and foot-shaped basal cell; microconidia pyriform, globose, oval, usually 0-septate, 5-10 × 3.5-6 μm, but occasionally 1- septate, cylindrical 5-15 × 1.5-3 μm, produced only on false heads on mono- and polyphialidic conidiogenous cells. Teleomorph. Not known. Notes. This species grows on Glycerol Nitrate Agar (G25N) medium with a growth rate less than 2 cm and produces pinkish aerial mycelium and greyish orange pigmentation; growth on mannitol medium shows a growth rate of less than 4 cm with reddish white or pale red mycelium and grayish red or reddish brown pigmentation; growth on Czapek-Dox Iprodione Dichloran Agar medium (CZID) results in a growth rate of less than 5 cm and white or orange aerial mycelium and greyish brown or orange grey pigmentation. The fungus produces urease and phosphatase enzymes, but does not produce acid on creatine sucrose agar, acetylmethylcarbinol compound.
